Number
Numbers
are divided into two parts: cardinal numbers and ordinal numbers. Without stale
bass again let's just take a look at the following explanation:
A.Cardinal
Numbers
Cardinal
numbers are numbers that state how many objects, people, or animals such as
one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, and so on. But be
careful in writing numbers 14 and 40 with letters. 14 is "fourteen",
40 "forty", because usually there are many people who are wrong to
read it, sometimes 40 read "fourty" but without the letter
"u". So is the 5 "five", 15 "fifteen", 55
"fifty five" 105 "a hundred five" and so on. Sometimes many
people wrongly pronounce the number that there are 5 numbers, especially
children.
Example Cardinal
Numbers:
B. Ordinal Numbers
Ordinal numbers are
numbers that indicate the rank or position of an object or something, for
example first, second, third, fourth fifth, and so on. Just add 'th' to a
regular number. Unless the ending number 1 will end in 'st', the number 2 will
end in 'nd', number 3 will end in 'rd', and 0 (usually in the tens) will end in
'tieth/ieth'. Note also that only the last number is written as a suffix
ordinal numbers:
421st = four hundred
and twenty-first
5,111th = five
thousand, one hundred and eleventh
Example Ordinal
Numbers:
C. Calculation
1.
Addition (Penjumlahan)
How
to read sums in math? In a simple sum, we usually read "plus" for the
symbol of addition (+), and read "is" or "are" for symbol
(=). Example:
2 + 2 = 4 (two plus two
are four)
6 + 5 = 11 (six plus
five is eleven)
What is 8 + 6? (What is
eight plus six?) (Berapa 8+6?)
In
the larger sum, (included in a more formal style) we use "plus" for
symbols (+), and "equals" or "is" for symbol (=).
712 + 145 = 857
(seven hundred and
twelve plus a hundred and forty-five is eight hundred and fifty-seven) or
(seven hundred and
twelve plus a hundred and forty-five equals eight hundred and fifty-seven)
2.
Substraction (Pengurangan)
In
the conversation model, with regard to small numbers (simple subtraction),
people usually read them using "minus" for symbols (-) and
"is" or "leaves" for symbol (=).
7 - 4 = 3
read (Four minus seven
leaves three)
or (Four minus seven is
three)
or (Seven take away
four leaves three)
or (Seven take away
four is three)
In
more formal usage, or with greater numbers, we read "minus" [read: /'
mainәs/] for symbols (-), and "equals" for symbol (=).
619 - 428 = 191
Read (Six hundred and
nineteen minus four hundred and twenty-eight equals a hundred and ninety-one)
3.
Multiplication (Perkalian)
In
a simple calculation, there is an approach most commonly used in America, that
is, by "multiple by" in the digits for the symbols (x) and
"is" for symbols (=).
3 x 4 = 12
Read (Three multiple by
four is twelve)
6 x 7 = 42
Read (six multiple by
seven is forty-two)
In larger calculations,
there are several possibilities. That is reading "times or multiple
by" for symbols (x) and "is" or "makes" for symbol
(=).
17 x 381 = 6477
Read (seventeen
multiple by three hundred and eighty-oneis six thousand, four hundred and
seventy-seven)
or (seventeen times
three hundred and eighty-one is six thousand, four hundred and seventy-seven)
In a more formal style,
we usually read "multiplied by" for symbols (x), and
"equals" for symbol (=).
17 x 381 = 6477
Read (seventeen
multiplied by three hundred and eighty-one equals six thousand, four hundred
and seventy-seven)
4.
Division (Pembagian)
In the simplest way,
use "divided by" for the symbols (:), and "is" for the
symbol (=).
261 : 9 = 29
Read (two hundred and
sixty-one divided by nine is twenty-nine)
But in smaller counts,
people usually use "into" for symbols (:), and "goes" to
symbol (=).
9 : 3 = 3
Read (Three into nine
goes three)
